If we do not believe in freedom of speech for those we despise we do not believe in it at all.

Who said it? Does it hold true today? I try my best to adhere to this idea but I will admit some answers bring me down to their level. Let's all have some class and follow this lead!

It was Noam Chomsky and yes I agree whole heatedly. If we can't allow people their point of view then we are truly lost. This doesn't mean, however, that I won't ask you to back it up or challenge you.

I agree that we all have freedom of speech and we can choose to go along with what another says or disagree. The name calling and so forth need to stop. Anyone has a right to comment on what someone says; just keep it out of the gutter.

It's called respect and the type of forum you have here does not keep those people who have no respect out. There are other boards that do demand that people be treated respectfully. (no flaming)

This Voltaire quote is close:

I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it.

But really, a simple search should answer this question.

The fact is that people dont understand that we need those differing opinions. Even the ones we disagree with, even the stupid *** ideas because if you dont have them then you dont have democracy.

yes I agree. We all have the right to speek our minds in this country. What a lot of people don't relize though is that they don't have right to be heard.
