People who are lacking confidence need to prove that they are equal or superior to others. Language is a barrier to equality. If you cannot express yourself adequately, it is hard to communicate precisely. For people who need to prove they are equal, the best thing is to show by possessions because they are visual cues to show others.
You may be able to afford the best car, but if you drive a Geo Metro, it is hard for people to make the connection. If you drive a Ferrari, you immediately make a statement about yourself. Look what I have!
If you wear a work shirt, that does not confirm you have good taste in clothing, but if it has a Nike logo, it makes a visible statement about who you are.
You like good brands, so you must be a person of quality. If your wristwatch is a Rolex, you are a person of excellent taste. If you wear a Timex, you have a consumer product.
Possessions do not make a person happy because they become old, or replaced by the newest or the best, or the latest.
Nobody wants to think of themselves as average. They are better in a world that encourages competition. If you are average, then you get common things. A person of quality deserves and gets quality things. Beauty is a tangible guideline. So is an excellent figure. College degrees are a measurement of success. Having a muscular physique is a measurable standard.
The only real sense of accomplishment comes from the path of improvement. Peace with yourself comes with the realization that you are a good person with good values and good intentions. If you have enough money to eat and wear comfortbale clothers and have a roof over your head, you are better off than many people in the world.

We're not content because we live in a world where status means everything. How does one define status? By what possesions you own. Your house, your car, your tech gadgets, your clothing, even the foods you eat all define your status-whether you're rich or poor, you're cool or uncool, you're worthy of someone's friendship or not...it all depends on what you're perceived like. We're not content because we all want to reach the point when we are all accepted as genuine part of society and are respected for who we really are. This is why we idolized the rich- because they can afford the lifestyle we all strive for.
Basically, we're not content because we're ambitious and we always want to be better than someone else and recognized for who we are through what we own and what we do.

I am an agnostic, studying to be Buddhist.
It is so peaceful, and cleansing. It is about letting go of wanting more. It is about contentment, and love and peace.
Include yourself in the "humans". Try not to dwell on why THEY do stuff, but what you can do to be peaceful and kind and above the fray. Sort of like Jesus said, to take the beam out of your own eye, before you look for the splinter in someone else's.
Forgive yourself and others for their failings. Rejoice in the eternal moment.
Spencer Cat has a good point.
Good luck.

I strongly believe that it is because we as human beings need to be better. Otherwise we were going to be mediocres.
Most of the best inventions have been because somebody is not contented with something and believes that it could be better.
The human being is called to be better and better, and its creativity make of him a creator of new things when the use of creativity develope the things in the environment.

You're only seeing what is being popularized. There are millions of people on this earth who are not only contented with what they have, they are happy to share it with those who have not. This happens on a daily basis all over this world. Unfortunately, you only hear about it in times of crises. The rest of the time it doesn't sell newspapers or bring high TV ratings.

We are not contended if what we have because we always want to have the best. And best is very relative. The "best thing" for us today will not be the "best thing" for us in the future. Our preferences changes as well as our outlooks. With these changes, our preferences likewise changes.
Our desire to be better is hard to satiate because as human beings, we are designed to be dynamic, to always look for ways to improve ourselves and our lives.
Contentment is an ideal.

Because people WANT what they don't NEED.
So they do not realise, that what they do have is usually more than enough.
That, or, due to the first statement above, they DON'T HAVE what they DO NEED, which means that it is very difficult for them to be content.
Also, this statement by Buddha might be relevant:
"All life [in this world] is suffering".
Buddha also said:
"There is a way out of suffering"

I believe that we are greedy and desire perfection whatever that may be, so thus we want whatever we do not or cannot have.
Besides, what we have we tend to take for granted. We like different too...this is why I find black skin beautiful...white is okay...but..*shrugs* I'm white so it is nothing special to me.
Just watch a baby or something for a while. Present it with a toy and it plays with it....put another toy beside it and it wants that toy.
Ha ha. I am rambling.

But the tragedy is that this want for having and having doesn't make us happy must of the greedy people are unhappy people , because they never have enough, They cannot have enough.

Biologically, it would be impossible for any human being to ever be content for more than a moment. All that is possible is for that one moment of contentment to be extended indefinitely so that it fills one's life..
