Depends on a lot of things, what borough you're in, what neighborhood you're in, how drunk you are....etc. I went to school in the Bronx. If you walked one way, it was mob controlled little Italy and if you walked another way, it was sketchier. But most of the incidents off campus involved students who were insanely drunk getting themselves into trouble.
Of course, even Manhattan which is pretty safe can be dangerous if you lack street smarts.

New York in general is one of the safest cities in America. Giuliani's crackdowns, although controversial, worked as promised.

It would also probably depend on the school's location in NYC. Columbia is in Harlem, while NYU is in the Village.

New York is much safer than many other cities. You still need to be careful -- but it is a great place for a young person to live.

Much safer than it used to be. Just learn the neighborhoods. Some are ok to wander in, some are less safe.

new york is one of the safest big cities in the united states. you just need to make sure that you don't do anything stupid and travel in packs through dangerous areas. i am very glad that i went there for my four years of college and wish that i still lived in nyc.

good luck with the decision.

As safe as you keep yourself. Avoid stupid risks. You know them when you see them.
