I dumpster dive a local place that throws away TONS of ethernet cables, but they chop about 3" off of one end of each one (unless it's sealed in plastic, but this is rare there). I want to do something polite to try and get them to stop doing this! It would make it easier for them just to throw it away with both ends on, that way they can be more productive doing what they're SUPPOSED to be doing... anybody agree? anybody know anything i can do to get them to leave their cables whole so i can recycle them???

perhaps work out a deal w/ them, "I'll recycle these ie..re-use them for productive reasons if you stop whacking off the ends".

Obviously you want to sound a little more professional. Unless they have a legitimate reason for not wanting other people using thier discarded stuff though I dont see why. It would probably mean you'd no longer need to dumpster dive either..

It'd probably look really good in your favor if you even offered to supply the container to them that they can throw thier cables into.

Tons of ways to make friends at places...that'll probably be the easiest though to accomplish what you are wanting..

1. the lawyers have kluged everything, and, businesses don't wnat their excess merchandise ending up being the reason you don't pay $29.99 for a 'free' cable, and then, when one is found to be the cause of the loss of data in a network, and cost $2.5 million in losses, they get sued! Along with the person who dumpster dived! But, the DEEP POCKET pays the most, even if they are only 1% negligent, for not having chopped off the end!

2. I bought a termination set, for $28 on the Internet. Included were boots, ends, crimpers, and a tester. I build/rebuild my cables.

3. I believe in recycling, but, I don't even let them know that they are supplying needy kids, or thrid world countries, instead of causing the toxins to be released into my drinking water!

There are some people who are mean enough that if you mention your diving, they will put locks on the dumpster, cut the cables into little pieces and otherwise screw with your efforts to recycle. Those are usually the people youll see in bankruptcy court, who are asking how it could have happened!

In all my 'recycled' computers, there is a recycled system of bits, called PCLINUXOS, Get yours: http://pclinuxos.com

They're chopping off the end so that people won't use them. A lot of people don't know how to install the connectors and will just let the cables go to the landfill or the junk yard. My advice is to invest in a set of cable pliers for crimping the connectors on and let them keep giving you free cables. So what if a few inches are missing. They're free and what I hear in this question is a bit of frustration that you might have to actually do something to the cables to make them usable or sale able. Why not just take the blessing for what it is and make the best of it with a little more effort?

You can post notices at office building entrances, asking they adopt a cable recycle policy. Maybe you can even, if well written, offer a cable recycle collection service....seeing's you feel strongly about this issue.

Otherwise, I'd chill on the dumpster diving, police tend to frown on such people for good reason.

They are probably throwing away obsolete or defective cables and don't want anyone to pull them out of the dumpster and try to return them to a retail store for a refund.

I can tell you what they will probably will say........

That business pays for that dumpster from the city or a private company and you are trespassing when you go dumpster diving in it.
They will probably tell you to stop and if they catch you in it then they are going to press charges against you.

I don't think I would be going in their business and telling or asking them to do ****........
