The electric keyboard; Prior to the '80s, the word "riff" was most often applied to the electric guitar and bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple or AC/DC. The glorious '80s brought the keyboards into a more prominent position than they had probably ever held. Let's examine some of those old songs that help pioneer this glorious instrument:

* Journey-"Separate ways apart"- Jonathan cain's stirring synth centerpiece is awesome.
* Van Halen-"Jump" sure eddie was good but on this monster hit, the synth riff is like nobody's business.
* Prince-"1999" the synth riff was so good that Phil Collins pretty much 'borrowed' it for 'Sussudio'
* Bon Jovi-"Runaway" this song starts and ends with a rhythmic attack of the synth
* Bruce Springsteen-"Dancing in the Dark" bruce let Roy Bittan go crazy with the synthesizer on this track and the keyboard riff is just pure genius on this pop/rock classic.

To this day the electric keyboard can hold its own unique place on stage with any other instrument.
