No, they're not a bad influence, actually is the opposite, is about a group of people fighting for what is right and big issue in the book is racism, (in this case evil wizards want everyone to be "pure blood") Harry Potter fights against them.
It is said to be a bad influence because ignorant people hear about spells, magic, wizardry and think is "evil"
Actually, is a story based around magi the same way that children's classic stories are, like Sleeping Beauty, there's plenty of magic and spells on hat one ad is not considered to be a bad influence
It's a great, beautiful story, easy to read, amazingly well written with many marvellous characters which just don't let you put the book down.
Read the 2nd one and find out for yourself, is short, so you wont feel like you've wasted time if you don't like it. It starts to get more into the story than the 1st one, and you'll understand everything even if you haven't read the 1st one. I did that and loved it. I've read them many times now (I'm 22)
The movies are awful though, the actors did a really good job,BUT the directors of 3rd and 4th were not interested in the story

I don't think the Harry Potter books are a bad influence. I see a lot of comparision to World War 2 in those books where good vs evil are involved. By reading the sixth book you can see how a evil dicator comes into being; and how he gets his followers. You will also see that even a good person like Harry's father can be a bully, most popular people aren't bullies but really some of them are no body wants to admit they are. I find that by reading the Harry Potter's book you can get to understand human nature a lot. So really if there is magic involved in this book these books are more a study of human nature. I find the books enjoyable to read.

I personally love the books. I've read them all countless times and seen all of the movies at least once. Many people do say that they are a bad influence but I don't think it's true- if anything, I think they are a good influence. They teach people about the struggles of wartime, and how hard it is to make the decisions between right and wrong. In fact, Dumbledore's speeches are inspiring at times- he talks of making the choice between what is right and what is easy, and that the people we love are never truly gone. It describes how horrific war is, and all this is presented in an enetertaining book. The Harry Potter series is, without a doubt, my favorite series of all time.

I'm a 40 yr. old wife and mother and I love Harry Potter. I can't tell you how many times I've read the books or watched the movies. I'm reading the books to my kids and they love it as much as I do. The only people who say it's a bad influence are the ones who haven't read the books.

BS they're a bad influence...it's only the uptight catholic freaks saying that, and they haven't even read the books. The HP books have very clear morality...good vs evil and the value of family and close friends. Only a dolt would think they are a bad influence.
I think the books are great. It's a tough call between GoF and OotP being my favorites. Many people/kids think OotP is just too long and boring but, really, the character development in that book is fantastic. I'm not really looking forward to the movie for that one...it's going to be a real hack job cutting it down from 800 pages.

Im not sure it's a bad influence. Just remember that it is fiction, just like Lord of the Rings and other fun works to read.
I'm a believer in God's word- the bible, but reading fun works of fiction is a joy for me and my family.
I am also an aspiring writer, and love to enjoy reading stuff by other creative writers, of which JK Rowling most definitely is.
Her books are so fun though, it definitely makes you want to be at Hogwarts for real. But that's what good fiction does, it touches on that imaginary world that appeals to the child of us all.
From a christian perspective- read that series along with books that have more christian undertones, like the Chronicles of Narnia or The Mark of the Lion series. Those were also very enjoyable books.
Hope that helps!

I love them, read them many times over. They give a good insight into the good and bad sides of people. Very intertaining and lets me remember how hard it was for me growing up, even though I never had it as bad or as exciting as Harry!
Harry Potter is fiction, and not reality. I don't think they're a bad influence whatsoever.

I love them. The author is a very talented woman and you can tell from the complexity of her books and the subtle intertwining of her plot lines that she has been developing the story for many years.
How bad of an influence that they are depends on how you take them. Blaming a book for making you do things if you read it is ridiculous. Keep an open mind and remember that its fiction, and you'll do fine.
