you should read all Peanuts comics, they have been around since 1950 and they rule! especially the ones from the 60s -- 70s.

Archie, Lil' Abner, Mutt and Jeff, Little Nemo in Slumberland, The Yellow Kid, Nanvy, Little Lulu, Brenda Starr, Terry and the Pirates, Barbar could be added to your list.

Krazy Kat by George Herriman is a famous one.

Hogan's Alley (with the Yellow Kid) was the first comic strip ever created, so that might be a good thing to look at.
