Try a different defragmenter. I use Diskeeper Lite - its freeware - and its much better. Does a thorough job. You can download it from
Major Geeks. Give it a go.. It's 12mb's of software so its quite a big prog. But once you've got it! I'd be interested to hear your results if you decide to give it a go..
Also - what you find is that system defragmenters (built into the machine) continully stop because other programs interfere. So you get continual instructions to restart. With a self-contained piece of software like Diskeeper you don't get that problem.

Because there's only so much it can do per pass, and your drive must be very fragmented. It would do you some good to delete everything you can do without first so that the defragmenter has more space to move files around. I assume you are using the defragmenter included with your operating system and recommend diskkeeper, widely available over bit torrent.

You need 25% of your hard drive free to do a complete defrag.

I know, its a pain, and it never moves all the files to the start of the disk, I still end up with blocks of data all over the place

Try closing down all programmes running in background - antivirus, popup blockers, etc. via task manager. DON'T forget to restart them before going back on line, safeest way is to reboot.

no, I don't know why. mine always has that annoying thing. I stopped using it because it always messes up my system somehow, and doesn't speed up any processing time.
