As puppies or kittens we've all witnessed them playing with their own image but as they grow older the loose interest with their image. I'm pretty sure cats are self-aware because of their 'the universe only exist b/c of me' attitude. What's your opinion?

Excellent question... one of the best I have seen on here.

I think dogs, cats... all animals are self aware. But, we as humans, are rather short sighted and not open to possibilities such as this, and to that, we tell ourselves that humans are the only animal who is capable of being self aware.

Humans think way too much of themselves sometimes...

I agree with the person above. I work a lot with horses and I think that they are self-aware, and certainly develope a very clear idea of themselves and their identity but at the same time their personalities are socially different so that I think that they really do understand themselves in part how they relate to eachother. I think that this is also true with dogs and cats, that their identity relates a lot to the beings around them including other animals and you. Maybe?

Neither dogs nor cats did not pass the mirror test. There are no indications that any of them are even aware of how a mirror works. They play because they think it's a different animal in front of them.

They seem to be self-aware to me. I have no scientific evidence of this, but they seem to be!
