It depends on your circumstances and family make up, you dont state this so it is impossible to answer, if you have children maybe, if you are single no, depending on where you live.
Go to your local authority offices and ask for a Pre tenancy determination form. This needs to be filled in with the landlord of the property that you want to rent.
You then submit it to housing benefit who will post it to the rent determination officer who will write to you, usually within 7-14 days with the amount that you are eligble for.
NOTE This is extremely important to do BEFORE you sign any tenancy agreement. As you will know whether you can afford this.
It also depends whether you have any other income, ie if you work at all you may recieve a deduction which is means tested. without any more info it is difficult to establish, but fill in a pre tenancy determination form for a guideline for what you may be eligible for.

£500 a week, month or what? Benefit levels are determined by a valuer from the inland revenue who assesses what a fair rent would be. So it all depends on (a) what the property is worth and (b) whether it is excessive for your family (ie they will not pay benefit on a four bedroomed house if there are only 2 of you.

No. You can apply for some help but I think they decide how much they think you SHOULD pay for rent and they give you that or a proportion of that. We are entitled to some help as we are on a low income but despite us paying the average price for our size house, the council reckon we are paying too much so they will pay an amount which is hardly worth the bother.

H.B will pay your rent, suitable for your circumstances, and at the average local rent. If your single, this is a bedsit, or one bed flat, though bedsit rates are often defaulted to for singles. Look in the local paper, get a feel for single room bedsit prices...just above the lowest...thats what the council will pay. On average, its about £65 week for a single person.
If you have a child, look at two bed property prices, the lower average is what they'll pay.
So, a direct answer is, £500 a month, will be paid, if you have at least one child. £300 tops per month, if your single.

-Depends on how many kids you have, and what sort of accomodation you are seeking to rent.
Obviously they won't let you take lease on a five star luxury pent house, but they will consider what is reasonable to your needs and circumstances.

. . . if they didn't, there'd be a lot more homeless in London, you're looking at that for one bedroom (as it happens, I've got a couple of spare rooms), coincidence or what? . . .
