im curious what copyright issues there are with t-shirt selling.

The images you print on a t-shirt should either be of your own original designs OR are images that you licensed to use from their respective owners.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Essentials of Licensing Intellectual Property by Alexander I. Poltorak, Paul J. Lerner
* The Licensing Business Handbook, Fifth Edition by Karen Raugust

Anything that is copyrighted cannot be placed on a T-Shirt without the owner's permission. Public domain things, like the smiley face, can be put on T-shirts without consequence, however.

Its a common question in the shirt forums. If you are selling thru someplace like CafePress (which I like because its easiest and free) then check out their forums.

you cant profit of some ones name or product with out paying them or getting permission
