If you mean Native Americans, you probably mean those who live in the southwest, right? Well, if they are from the same area as Mexicans, that's why their skin has a similar tone; alot of cultural similarities come from living in the same place with the same climate, same resources available, etc.

I think that many people have lots of similarities; it doesn't matter what race or culture they are.
You seem to have asked this as a serious question although I don't know if you are referring to Native Americans or Indians (as in India)...I think it is because if I recall my history properly, some Mexicans are essentially Native Americans...they just lived south of the American-Mexican border. As for the Indians, I think that perhaps you are just noticing the generally dark hair color and generally tanner complexion. In this answer, I do not mean to insult anyone based on their culture or ethnicity, and I hope that no one interprets my answer as such.

First I noticed that some of the people who answered your question are politically correct and dont want to use the word Indian but Native American. Im a Native American also though Im not Indian because I was born in the USA even though my forebears came from Eastern Europe. One thing that you will find when you see the Indian people are a resemblance to asiatic people. Both groups tend to have broad noses, small, and a look in the eyes that is considered oriental. One of the other people who answered your question aluded to that also. Im from an eastern European Jewish background. My mother in law had an asiatic look about her as I just described. During earlier times in the Russian Pale there would be government sponsored massacres of Jews. Usually these were done by white russians. Usually rape of Jewish women was involved. Some modern day Jewish people have blonde hair and blue eyes. Other pogroms were done by asiatics who would massacre jews at the behest of the Russian Imperial government. So sometimes you see Jews with oriental features like my mother in law. My father in law who was born in 1899 came from a primitive village in Austro Hungary near the place in the Carpethian Mountains where the people belived in vampires. The christians would occasionally go berserk and dig up a body in the graveyard and pound a wooden stake in its heart. The jews were more sophisticated. They only believed that they had to worry if they didnt follow a certain religious ceremony and in gods anger he would kill them with a lightening bolt. Anyway one time the head of the village told the jews to hide because the russians were going to come in and massacre them. So all the christians put crosses in their windows to warn the russians not to touch them. This time a group of central asian muslims came into the village. The crosses so enraged them that they attacked any house with a cross and many innocent christians died that day.

Possibly. Did you notice that there is as much difference in how some Native American groups look as there is between people from Europe? Did you notice how similar the Navajo people look to people in the Arctic and in parts of China?
Maybe people traveled a lot further in the past than we thought possible. Did you ever wonder how things only found in ancient Egypt, found their way to South America?

Are you looking in some publication that says, "This person is Indian"...or "so-and-so is Mexican"? Because, frankly, at times you can't tell Mexicans from Cubans from Puerto Ricans and so on. I'd like to know where you got your certification in determining ethnicity by looking at people.
So, the answer to your question is that I have not scrutinized their looks enough to know.

Because a majority of "Mexicans" are in fact descended from the Maya and Aztec's and other tribes. Several years ago at a business dinner I was conversing with businessmen and their wives at a restaurant. When one woman commented on how good the food was, I asked what she ate at home (Mexico). She answered "steak, potatoes, peas, carrots, and so forth". Dumb me then said, don't you eat any tacos? And was told "Oh, that is Indian food, it is good but that is not what we eat."

Most of the Mexicans are descended from Cortez and his men who married Indian women. Therefore there would be simularities in that they are short and stocky. Of course many Mexicans are pure Indians, especially those descended from the Mayans who lived in Guatamala.
