A number of options:
1. There is a wide array of phone cards you can buy and use.
2. Try products like skype.com or voipdiscount.com. This will be the cheapest if both of you use the same software.
3. Try other services like telediscount.co.uk. They claim to charge 1p/min to any Australian landline.

Buy a 3 or 4 pound phone card from the nearest corner shop. That'll give you at least 2 hours and maybe as many as 5 or 6.

You mean the FREE way to do it.
Try MSN or Yahoo Messenger. All you need is for both people to have accounts and then both to have a microphone.
Otherwise try Skype.
This whole thing is known as "VoIP" which means Voice over Internet Protocol
:-)

Via IM actually. Use one of the bigger instant messaging tools such as this one or msn, use your speakers and get a mic. That way, you can do it for free, and it's quite simple to do.

Both of you get Skype -> www.skype.com
You could also use Yahoo! Messenger, and Windows Live Messenger...
If you have broadband, it is free.
