Anywhere from end of October till February. Also dont get stuck at typical places touristy places such as Mumbai, New Delhi etc. Although both are good and offer various sights to enjoy.....somehow they dont represent the 'real india'. Avoid the major cities and travel to offbeat places.

India is incredibly big and very diverse. Every state has its own unique culture. From beautiful himalayas in northern state of Jammu/Kashmir to amazing beaches in Goa, Kerala. On west there is great Thar Desert in Rajasthan and in east you can visit the world renowned Assam with its gorgeous tea plantations and lush forests.

Since you haven't mentioned any specific area in India to visit and keeping in mind overall climatic conditions, festivities, colours, events and entertainment; October to March is the best time for tourism point of view.
