I have been working at home doing medical transcription for several years now and my best advice to you is education.
I went back to college at the age of 38, got a degree in Health Information, worked in an office for awhile for experience, and then started working from home. I now type clinic notes for five physicians and do the ER reports from the local hospital for extra money. I make more money from home than I could ever make in an office here, plus I have no commute, no work clothes, no office politics, or any of the hassles that come from being employed in an office. The only downside is that I have no benefits as in insurance, paid vacations, etc. The tradeoff is definitely worth it.
I never could have gotten this job, tho, without my education as my boss will not even speak to someone without a degree or experience. There are legitimate work at home jobs out there, but you have to have the knowledge before you can get the job.

Scams and Phishing sites abound in the Internet. I've been their victim sometime. In a couple of cases, though the company is legit, I found the marketing/compensation systems unreliable and/or the product impossible to sell. Yes, I do lost some money by shooting blindly for online opportunities. You can be their prey too if you can't get reliable advise from person who have experienced being cheated.
From my experience, I recommend you to look for:
1. Financially-solid online company who has not less than 5-years of productive and honest business. They must have a proven (automated, if possible) compensation plan that pays, provides superb support via dedicated (not outsourced) forum, a satisfied community of members, and openly-posted company information.
2. A marketable, high-demand product that can be sold worldwide and in realtime. A product that can be supported aftersales. Not those that can only give you income from ad-placing, spamming, online research, surveys that will take much of your precious time and/or are impossible to sell/accomplish.
3. The company has in place a simple, fully automated yet rejection-free marketing system. From mass-mailed invitations, tracking, automated billing, after-sales support to Swiss-clock precision of commision payout .
4. A business that anyone worldwide can do. Even average people with novice computer knowledge, or are those not really business-inclined can have the opportunity to succeed too.
5. Compensation plan that provides an ever increasing residual income that is diredtly proportional with your desire to help others succeed also in life.
Sounds difficult? Yes. And it cost me money to find those that pays. I may give you a list here. But there is one company that not only provides above but exceeds all expectations - - -

Start your own business. You might need to put an ad out in the paper. If you are really adventurous, you can just go by word of mouth, go door-to-door, and make your own webpage and flyers to post around town for advertisement. It might cost you a couple bucks to start, but not nescssarily if you have a way with meeting the right people and selling yourself.

Check your local Craigslist ... I see work at home jobs advertised there all the time. www.craigslist.org. Of course, you will need to respond to the ads to see who charges a fee, and who doesn't.
Good luck with your job search. Have you considered doing the Ebay thing?

That's the million dollar question....... I hate even looking anymore - none of it is honest work..... it's really marketing and you get paid when you sell or find someone..... I'm looking for someone who really has a project or work from home for a real company.... really hard to get - you'd think there'd be more of it in 2006.....
