In my opinion: A Gibson 335 electric can not be beat! But if you have to settle for less, get a Fender or Les Paul

Definitely a matter of opinion. It also depends on what style you play. I am in a variety band, plus I do a lot of studio work, so I need a guitar that is very versatille in the style that I can pull from it. I play a '94 Fender Jeff Beck signature model. For me, it is the best guitar and I've never been happier. Since I got it, I've stopped buying electric guitars, so that has to mean something. You can still buy it, but with different features than the one I have. $1799 list price, you can probably snag it for $1300.

Remember -- a lot of people are going to point you to Paul Reed Smith. If this starts to become a trend, you might want to check those out, too. Very different-sounding instruments, but they feel great.

Any more questions, let me know.

Peace.

this is a very difficult question to answer, because there are so many other questions you have to answer before you know which is best FOR YOU. First of all... do you want an acoustic, classical or electric guitar? if you get and acousitc, does it have a pick up so that you can plug it in and play it through an amplifier? Are you taking lessons? what kind of music do you want to play? do you want to play alone or with others? (heh heh) etc. after you get those issues decided, then you can go to the guitar store and try out various guitars. choose one that has low action and so is very easy to play.

My favorite is Dean guitars. I'm a big fan of the designer guitars from the late 50s but Fender guitars are easier to play. Fender Squires are pretty affordable, they range from 100 to 200$
