Like much of the service industry the attendant's position is to help your evening run as smoothly as possible.

You do not need to tip for a standard interaction like a towel.

Here are some tipping situations:
Locates you an aspirin/ etc.
Gets your husband/ Date, and relays a message
Pins up a fallen hem
Hold your hair while you wretch
Is your 10 minute therapist after you just learned you were fired.
Keeps the washroom private for you if you are a celebrity

100 years ago Aristocrats had valets or hand maids to helps keep them in order. It is like a mini rental version. That goes on tips.

Do you tip the toll booth attendent? Do you tip the store shelves stocker at the grocery store? Do you tip the person who takes your money at a gas station? Do you tip the usher at your church? Do you tip the tickettaker at the movie theater?

The point is that all these people play as much as or more than an assistance to your interaction with them as the guy who sits in a rest room and hands you a towel or a comb.

I'll tip for good service anywhere -- but that guy doesn't provide any meaningful service whatsoever.

I think a restroom attendant is an unneeded expense, someone should be there to check it often to make sure it's clean, but not to hand you a paper towel

I didn't ask for someone to serve me a paper towel, and I don't use any of their stuff. It's different if you go out to eat or to a salon or get a bellboy, and therefore have chosen to receive a service. I'd just as soon the bathroom not be a place to get served.

Because giving a buck to a guy handing you a paper towel is ridiculous.

I try to tip all the time. but i also base the tip on the service i get . If i get bad service they get a bad tip and good service gets a good tip.

If they are the only way to get a paper towel to dry my hands I give them nothing. If I use their stuff, gum, cologne, etc., I will give them a buck!!!

Its pointless to give somebody money just for a paper towel when you can do it yourself, they are unneeded.
