The first typewriter was produced by Sholes in 1868. The letters that hit the ribbon and paper were arranged in a circle and the keyboard was arranged alphabetically.
The whole thing was mechanical and a bit slow. There was a problem that when two letters were typed one after the other and the letters were next to each other in the circle, the type bars (the levers with the letters on the end) tended to hit each other and jam.
To solve this problem, Sholes arranged the order of letters, and hence the keyboard, so that common pairs of letters in the English language were not next to each other. Examples are "TH" and "SH". This reduced jamming and made things go faster.

Dont be stupid, stupid. The keyboard is arranged in a way that we can type out words in the english language quickly and efficiently. You dont think someone sat down with a group of thinkers and decided on the best format to screw it all up for us? The keys are located across from each other so that in most cases you will use a keystroke from each hand and alternate. You type faster this way. Thats why bicycles have a foot pedal on each side, and not two on one side. Try rearranging your keys with a keyboard software, youll find its like learning how to evolve all over again.

Actually. The reason keyboards are not in alphabetical order is because when the typerwriter was first invented (TYPERWRITER, NOT COMPUTER) it WAS in alphabetical order and people got so increadibly fast the the prongs with the letters on them would get caught together. Someone (I can't remember who, sorry.) sat down and figured out a sytem that would give time between certain letter combinations so the typerwriter would not jam up and hence we have the present arrangement of keys on the keyboard.

Actually it is from the old typewriters. It was found to be easier to place often used keys together which made typing faster.

There are alphabetical order keyboards available. It is much tougher than the ones we have. So it is not a stupid invention after all.

It's because before (with old typing machines) people used to type to fast and break the machine, that's why they put the letters like that, it was too slower people so they don't break the machine.

I wish I new the answer but I think that if they were in alphabet order it would still be difficult. You rwould still have to learn to type with it. But really good question.

i read somewhere that the same guy who invented typewriters also gave typing lessons. when his students were learning to quickly and easily, he changed the keyboard around to its current order so it would take longer to learn. too bad i don't remember his name.

the primitive type writers were designed with great research considering frequently used letters to be assigned to more efficient fingers. and we are better off with what we have now thanks to those researchers.
