What do you want to copyright? The last time I had to copyright anything was 20 years ago, so the rules may have changed but then the easiest free copy right was to post yourself the thing you want copywriting with a proof of receipt. When it arrives - DO NOT OPEN IT - it is then your proof of copyright date.

To copyright something, it's done through the US Copyright Office. The application is fairly simple & is $45 per application.

Since you posted this in the Internet section, I assume you're wanting to protect something technological, so I posted some appropriate links below.

Despite what others state, a "poor man's" copyright is NOT the same as registering it. Here's what the US Copyright Office has to say:

"The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a 'poor man’s copyright.' There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration."

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!
