The correct answer is that you most likely either have a bad wire running from the fuel sending unit that goes to the gauge, or the sending unit itself is bad. I believe on your vehicle it's located on top of the fuel tank, and a pain in the butt to access. Take it to a dealer...the repair should still be covered under warranty, as the car's only 3 years old.
Hope this info helped.

the fuel gauge is located on your fuel tank (which you read on your dash). More then likely the wire going to the tank is lose somewhere. It is costly to get to the gauge as the fuel tank has to be removed. So my advise is to use your trip odometer. I have had the same problem on a 1990 mazda B2200.

It could just be the shape of the tank - or more likely, there is a hle in the top of the tank that spills the top bit, either get it repaired, or never fill it up all the way. I had a Pontiac that would happen with.

your sending unit that detects the fuel is sticking or bad. try putting in some fuel treatment and filling the tank up. it shows empty when you turn it off because it's not getting a signal. hopefully will start working for you. it is a pain to change out or expense to have the sending unit replaced.
