sounds like a vacuum leak is causing some blend doors to not work, very labor intensive, and time consuming...

Look under the hood and locate the little black plastic ball shaped item. It is usually attached to the hood on the driver's side. It should have two vacuum lines attached.
If there is not, or if one is broken, then NONE of the control for your HEATER-A/C unit will work correctly.
By law, all heaters MUST default to DEFROST or DEFROST/HEATER position if there is a control failure. We CAN live without the comfort of A/C, but the defroster is a MUST in the winter.

Check the vaccum line going from your engine compartment to the heater switch on the dash. Sounds like there's no vaccum getting in to operate the dampers on the duct work. Good luck.
