You need to say "goodbye". It's okay to hurt. It's okay to tell them you're going to miss them.
You're going to miss them whether you say "goodbye" or not.
You can't wrap up your happiness in someone else. Your happiness has to come from YOU. Yes, you can miss them. Yes, you can grieve that they're not around. But, you can't allow their proximity to dictate whether or not you're happy. Besides, they're going to college....not falling off the edge of the world.

You may hurt more if you follow through on your plan to not say "goodbye". Doing that is kind of selfish and may not spare you the hurt like you think it will. It may really hurt less and you may feel much better to say "goodbye" but not make a big deal out of it.

Are you never going to see this person again? If not, you might want to suck it up and say good-bye, because you may need the closure, if not let them know that saying goodbye in person is too difficult for you and you wish them the best, or write them a letter to explain your feelings. If you are going to see this person again, give them a call and tell them you will see them next visit.

This is part of avoidance. Ask yourself why you are really (not) doing this. Think about it like this. It may make it easier on you, but already you are wondering if it is the wise choice. Also, by not saying goodbye, what are you doing to the other person?

That's a wonderful thing your doing. I want through the same thing a few yrs. ago. It is part of letting go and you will be just fine. It will take awhile though to get over them. Best of luck!

So are you gonna avoid them? I think this might create confusion. Don't be afraid of the way you feel, Lovey Dumpling! You won't have any closure this way.

It sounds pretty selfish to me. But do what you want to do. I don't think they will understand. Is your goal is to be a drama queen and call attention to yourself by your absence?
