i have always been a big fan of jonathan richman, so when i realised he had done the music for 'there's something about mary' it made me even more enthusiastic about seeing the film.
jonathan richman has always had an eccentric approach to music (one of his most famous songs is 'i'm straight!') so i was only mildly surprised that he hadn't just written the film's theme music - he and his band wandered onscreen at random to sing the songs.
i thought it was the best use of music in a film i ever saw.
so that is my sort of one answer to your two questions.
