No toy can make a child smart. Intelligence is set at birth.

That said, there are toys that will bring out and develop a child's potential; toys that are manipulated in 3 dimensions, especially to build things (legos, blocks, construction sets) are good, as are any other toys that don't DO anything, leaving the child some discretion over how the toy is used (dolls, jumpropes, balls, etc.).

Summary: keep the toys simple, and avoid electronic toys that play themselves FOR the kid.

Legos, K-Nex, Erector sets (if they still exist).

I grew up with legos and feel like it was toy that actually made you think. Even if you're following directions word for word you're still building analysis and eye skills doing it.

depending on their age, anything that stimulates their curiosity. Bright colors, flashing lights, music. Just keep them interested and always thinking.
