As stated I have not long turned 50 and have never had a full medical - taking blood samples, tests on liver and kidney function etc. Are these types of medicals available on the NHS or does one have to go private. If so any recommendations would be helpful. An indication of the cost involved would also be useful.

I would ask your GP for a blood test, the practice nurse can also do medicals, like blood pressure, urine test and blood tests.
I would ring up your GP and ask if you need an appointment with the nurse or the GP. If it is with the GP you will need a longer appointment.
My practice writes to people every couple of years if they have not been seen to invite them for a medical check up with the nurse.
To answer your question all the tests you mentioned are available on the NHS.

You actually say in your question that you are in need of a medical, so make an appointment with your GP. Reading between the lines, I feel you have a reason, other than just turning 50, for wanting these test done. I'm assuming that you are not one of those people who bother the doc every time they sneeze, else you would have had these tests done.
Most of the tests for a human MOT can be done from just one blood sample. As you are not a pest, your doc should carry out a thorough check with no charge incurred.

I think that Bupa might do all that stuff for you. They give you an MOT (so to speak) when you join, I believe.

And I really hope you aren't the Phil C from Manchester that I think you might be...
