I don't think they are that bad if played right.

Arrgh! Why bagpipes? I could have told you how to tune any of the other ten instruments I play...especially violing which I've played for over 20 years.

Well, as with any instrument, you adjust the pitch slightly when you adjust the length of the instrument. For example, think of a flute and a tuba. The tuba has such a low sound because it is so big and has a longer length that the air travels while the flute is much smaller and higher pitched. Most orchestra wind instruments are arranged so that you can tune them by lengthening or shortening the instrument. They usually have a joint somewhere which you pull out or push in to adjust the length which thereby adjusts the pitch. Just think of that tuba and flute analogy.

I have actually wanted to always learn bagpipes and alpine horn. I also would like to learn how to yodel...I think the best place to practice yodeling would be in my neighbor's front yard early in the morning...but I can never seem to get up early enough.

Are you thinking of acousitic engineering? :) That involves physics!

(I apologize as I am sure I have annoyed you with answering a great portion of your questions, but that means that you have at least asked interesting questions! :) )

there's a way to tune them, i think you tune the drones by adjusting the length of them, but i only got my pipes a few weeks ago and have only one drone reed so i'm not entirely shure. i'm pretty shure that's what it is because my instructor made me play a low A and he adjusted the tenor drone untill he was happy then walked away.

A bagpipe cannot be tuned, it can only squawk.

Step one: Pick up bagpipe

Step two: Place in trash

Bag Pipes don't tune.

I'm afraid they do nothing but annoy.
