Why do people play the ethics card in Homework help?

I'm long past the homework phase in my life, and I try to help in the homework section as much as possible; however, it bothers me that people post answers like "Do Your Own Work!" and "Look it Up on the Web" or "You'll never get ahead unless you do your own work."
They do not know the asker, their situation, knowledge base, or intelligence. Who are they to judge?

I think that finding a way to get it done correctly teaches more resourceful ness, than just trying and getting it wrong. I can't go to my boss and say, oh I didn't want to ask for help, so I just did it wrong. Stop judging, and stay out of the category if you don't agree with the concept.

I agree. I try my best to answer questions without any judgment whatsoever, because there is no room for judgment when people ask you a straight question. Besides, unless the question asks for an opinion, it is against the Community Guidelines to post an answer that does not answer the question. If the question violates the rules, then you can report them, but answerers should expect the same to be done to them when they violate the rules.

Besides, sometimes all it takes is for someone to show you how to do ONE problem from start to finish for you to understand how to do the rest of your problems. Also, the answers that refer you to look it up on the Internet are annoying and pointless. What is the point of Yahoo Answers if you were always capable of finding the answers yourself? Not everyone has the same resources or intellect to research things on their own. If someone else is willing to help out or put in the work, then why not ask? I'm sick of the righteous babble that you have to constantly deal with here, but I will continue to do my part and help people out.

You are completely right. People should mind their own buisness, partially since they may be in the same predicament someday. This is sometimes a last resort for people who don't get the material, forcing them to be helped online. There is nothing wrong with that. If someone starts to build a dependence on this however, then it may be said to them that they need to start trying a little harder. People should be told to do their own work if they are slacking off. I see multiple questions a day asking, "Where can i find a summary of..." or, "Can someone write me a summary of..." Those people really should read the book. If they have read it and simply don't understand how to write the summary, then they should ask for help writing the summary and tips instead of asking for it to be written for them. That would be cheating. Cheaters do not prosper in the long run. If they cheat on a test early, they will not know the information later on for a final. So sometimes, the ethics card must be played, to help the cheaters on the right path, and to keep this site as decent and legal (PLAGAURISM) as it should be.

In many cases, people just need a start on how to approach something, like a math problem. Help there is fine - but the people who just give a number as an answer without explaining how to get the answer are no help except to someone who just wants somebody to do their homework - and without knowing how to get the answer, won't do much good anyway.

But I'm sure you've seen "questions" that are asking for someone to do the work, not help with it or point the asker in the right direction. Just saw one that said something like "would somebody do my summer project - I'll send you money through paypal" - sheeeeesh!!!!!!!

Most people who respond to the homework help try to help the person asking for help find a way to solve his or her question; on the other hand, some people find it hard to believe that a person with access to the Web and knowledge of its use (as proved by their use of Yahoo!Answers) cannot use a search engine.

I agree some people are unnecessarily rude and cruel in their responses. As you say, they do not know the asker, their situation, knowledge base, or intelligence; however, you do not know the responder, their situation, knowledge base, or intelligence. Who are you to judge?

Thank you very much for posting this. Just yesterday my 11 year old daughter asked me if she could post a question in the homework section. She's just asked for help once before and some of the answers were unpleasant. Like one mum wrote in and said that she was an 11 year old idot with an 18 month old baby. This really hurt her. I mean if that mum had time to go thru my profile where I had previously posted a question regarding my 18 mo, and seen it. surely she would have seen that my child's previous question " I am posting with my mum's Permission. Wish everyone could think like you my friend. I guess there are some and there are some!!! Thank you for helping in the homework section. I totally agree with your sentiments.
