Funny that people think that these (truly awful) dresses are part of Irish culture, when in fact they are NOT. The people who kept the culture alive, the country people who lived on farms or in remote village, could barely afford to dress themselves in ordinary clothes and shoes, never mind buy nasty, wasteful tat like those dresses. No, those 'creations' are American, plastic Paddy, efforts which have little to do with real Irish culture.

And I'm not even going into those hideous wigs the girls wear now ...

By the way, I am Irish and live in Ireland.

Because the Irish dancing dress makers think that they should cash in on all the ''plastic paddies'' in England and everywhere else and why not? You always know someone whos aunts cousins girlfriends mom is Irish, so that makes them Irish right? I know alot of people like this and because my family are all Irish, they come sniffing around me on St Patricks day to go drinking with them so they they can at least say they are with someone who is Irish. At least I got that off my chest.

The Irish are certainly not thick as a previous writer stated. They are a very talented warm kind people. The dresses are expensive because each dress is unique, hand embroidered, often using silk thread, very delicately sewn which can take days of work.Would one like to be underpaid for such creative work.

The prices have gone up over the years as the trends of sparkliness increase. Every year there is a new trend, for example this year, it's the tutu dress, or Gavin Doherty's designs. The dresses are beautiful, but they cost tons of money!

because they are hand made with very intericate designs that are all hand sewn. plus they are not made for mass distribution they are made to order so this means only a specialist can provide you with them. they take such a long time to make that the hours spent making them prove very costly to the consumer. you have to admit though they are very beautiful and worth the money. if you are finding the cost too expensive then try and buy one second hand. you could try e-bay or put an ad in your local newspaper or supermarket board telling people that you are looking to buy one! good luck i hope you find what your looking for!

OMG!! I know isnt it rediculous! They are so expensive because they are hand made to fit the person who is buying it! I cant believe it! And then because they are hand made to fit the person they barley fit after 2 years! So then you go back and pay another 400 something dollars for a new one!! ok biee
