I'm travelling via KL in the next week and have a spare so i thought i would go up to the perhentian islands and planning to go and stay on Kecil island, as i heard it had a good beach/travelling/diving/party vibe.

What are the perhentian islands like??

Is it very touristy or more for backpackers?

If not is there somewhere better in to go from KL and be back with in a week?

NO ATM machines in perhentian island..it is very touristy but it is not that cheap..considered expensive for backpackers..it is a high season now..you should book accomodation ahead..or you can go to Tioman Island..I prefer Tioman than Perhentian..

Both the Perhentian Islands[pulau=island] are excellent ! Been to Pulau Perhentian Besar 4 times since 1985, of course lots of changes over the last 20 years but still the place that make you wanted to return. A bit tight for backpackers but not very expansive. depend on your budget, you may try Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Gemia, Pulau Tenggol or Pulau Redang which are some of the best nearer to KL. Normally a package of 3d2n is more than enough for you to enjoy the beautiful island and marine life and it may cost around RM500 this day.

Been there, its like "heaven".

You cannot come to Malaysia and miss out on the east coast islands. They are a blast in every aspect of the word.
The sand's floury-fine and the water is crystal turqoise to blue. Talk about diving, snorkelling, water sports - there is no other place I would recommend.

Go for 3days 2 nights stay its affordable and partying vibes would depend on the resort ( I mean you cant really party if you stay in a desolated shack away from everyone)

First on the list = Perhentian Island, a total must.

Perhentian Island is a very good choice indeed to unwind..
But it's better be next week (Aug 14-17)...because Aug 18-27 will be packed with children and parents (school holiday)..

I've been there many times for diving....it's very good...but not as pristine as Sipadan or Redang.

Very touristy.....not for backpackers..very limited campground.

If u prefes camping...and wanted more secluded island...try Tenggol (via Dungun)... it has campground (I think) and much nearer to KL).

The Cameron Highlands are excellent. Not an islanf though.

The Perhenthians are beautiful. Plenty of places for backpackers to stay. A bit pricey though. The Diving is great......
