Whoever told you that is a friggin' idiot. Laptops can be shut down completely whenever you are done with them. I have been using mine that way for the last two years. I shut it down multiple times every day.

You can leave your computer on or shut it down it really doesn't matter that much, but from time to time it is a good idea to drain all the power and then charge it back up. That can help the battery last longer. Whatever you want to do with your computer, leave it on, or shut it off, should be fine.

It's always best to "hibernate" your notebook, instead of putting it on "Standby" or shutting it down each time. There is a significant amount of wear-n-tear on the notebook's hardware evertime its shutdown and restarted. I always use the "Hibernate" option during the days and turn it off completely during the nights. This reduces the wear-n-tear and increases the life of your laptop.
The Hibernate option has to be enabled first to be able to use it. To enable Hibernation, click on the power options in Control Panel and click on the Hibernate tab.... once there, check the "enable Hiberanation" option. Now to hinbernate, select shutdown from the start menu and press the "shift" key, this would change the "Standby" option to "Hibernate". Simply click on it and you're good to go. Now, the notebook is losing very little power and also saves you the trouble of starting it all over the next time you want to use it.
Cheers!

It's OK to start it up and shut it down, but you probably could just close the lid when you're done (this puts it into sleep) and when you open it again, just log in. Booting it up takes way too long for me. Your computer should run for several days at least in sleep mode w/o being plugged in. Just plug it in to the wall if you haven't used it in a few days.

Thats true for your pc at home. But I would shut my laptop down because it runs off of batteries. Although you shut your laptop off, its still fighting viruses and so forth. As long as your battery is charged, your laptop sill be fine if you shut it off. have you eve noticed that when you shut it down and turn it on, the date is still correct. thats because the memory, RAM and ROM is working will your computer is shut down. But do not shut the computers down at your job and at home. Desktop computers that plug into walls must stay on in order to fight viruses and perform auto updates around the clock.
