Contiguous file - Any file that exists on your hard drive in a single piece(not fragmented)
Unmovable files - Any file that can't have its parts moved, usually system files being used by your operating system.
Free space - Any unused space on your hard drive
For 4, this is normal as the operating system and core programs take up space.
5, not really as that will just revert everything back to the way it was before.

Give me a shout if you need anything else.

The information is incomplete, but don't worry about that right now.

don't throw the pc out the window - not quite yet.

When you run the "defrag" program, you don't really have to understand all that stuff. Just click the necessary buttons to start defragmenting the hard drive. When it's done, you will see a message telling you the results, but - again - that doesn't matter.

Just make sure you run the "defrag" program about once a week or once a month - your choice, depending on how disk usage you have - that is to say, how often do you re-save files?

After all, it is this action that causes the data on your hard drive to fragment, which is why you need to defrag the drive occasionally.

If you only use the internet, you probably don't need to defrag as often.

However, if you are typing in Word and saving your work on a regular basis, then you might need to defrag the hard drive more often.

Good luck.

The disk defrag utility 'tries' to organise the files on the hard disk to make access quicker. Some files are required by the system to be in a specific place, so are 'unmovable'. You can run defrag a few times if you want - it will not cause any damage, and usually improves on the second and third pass.
You don't need to do a System Restore (XP offers restore points) unless you have added a program that has caused chaos.

Contiguous files are files stored next to each other on the disk of the hard drive. The defragmentation process brings fragmented files together. Unmoveable files are usually system volumes, boot volumes and paging files necessary for your PC.Free space is the amount of disk space that has not been allocated. No - you don't need to do a system restore.

1contiguous file - The files is all joined up in one long line around the disk - the disk doesn't have to go to different places to find bits of the file

2 unmovable files - Files which are locked as they are in use or need to be in certain places on the disk and cannot be moved

3 free space - the amount of disk space left blank which you and the PC can use to store things in

4my capacity is37.26gb ..I have32.47gb free space - you have 32.47 gigabytes of disk space left to use, I think you have a laptop with a 40gb hard disk. You have only used about one 6th of the total space available to you and that includes all the Windows software and documents to date.

There is nothing wrong with any of the above. If you have reason to suspect there is something wrong with the pc, post the full range of symptons in another question.

Before you do anything...

Start your disk cleanup program. It is in your system tools folder located in the accessories program group. This is all found by clicking start, all programs, accessories, system tools, and then disk cleanup.

Run that program before you run disk defragmenter. After you are done successfully running that program, then go ahead and run Disk Defragmenter. It is located in the same place that disk cleanup was located.

When the program opens up, make sure you have your main hard drive c: selected. Do not worry about any other drives or partitions for now.

Once you have selected that go ahead and click analyze. After awhile it will tell you whether or not you need to defragment your harddrive. If it does not tell you one way or the other, then go ahead and defrag your drive anyways.

It'll take awhile so this would be a good time to go and get something to eat. =) Hope this helps.

No need to do a system restore, just defragment once a month and use a disc cleaner once a week, that should free up space and keep you up to speed. Hope this helps my friend !
