G'day Tomicide,

Thanks for the question.

Bob Marley confessed to shooting the sheriff on his 1973 album burning. He is quoted as saying "I want to say 'I shot the police' but the government would have made a fuss so I said 'I shot the sheriff' instead... but it's the same idea: justice."

It was the last single he released with original Wailers Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, who left to pursue solo careers later that year. It was recorded in London and finished in London. Chris Blackwell was the producer.

Eric Clapton recorded a cover version that was included on his 1974 album, 461 Ocean Boulevard, and featured backing vocals by Yvonne Elliman. It topped the American pop charts for a week in the summer of 1974. 461 Ocean Boulevard was one of Clapton's most successful album and Rolling Stone rated it as number 409 on its top 500 albums of all time. The success of Clapton's version raised Marley's profile as well.

The Marley versions from Live! and Talkin Blues were recorded on two simultaneous nights at the Lyceum Ballroom in London. The Talkin Blues version was from the first night and the Live! version from the second night.

In 1997, rapper/producer Warren G. covered the song for his Take A Look Over Your Shoulder (Reality) album.

I have enclosed more information about this classic song for your reference.

Regards
