Planning an overnight stay at Crater Lake, OR. Should we stick to one of the two determined campgrounds or go into backcountry? Any suggests are greatly appreciated!

The trip is the first week of September...

It really depends on what you like to do, and how rustic you like to go! If you are only staying one night, then I think you might prefer staying at a campground, but the Lost Creek campground, which is more rustic than the Mazama Campground.

If you really love hiking and back country, even for one night, then go for it. But if you are hikers, I was thinking you might want to stay in the Lost Creek Campground, then spend your daytime hours hiking the trails around and down to the Lake.

Crater Lake is interesting, I liked the lake cruise best, they take you out to the tallest cinder cone on the lake and let you climb it if you want...That was kind of cool, at that time and it was almost 20 years ago they let you camp up there if you wanted to stay overnight...We had planned to stay, but the GF wasn't feeling very well that day...The campgrounds around Crater Lake are nothing spectacular, just a place to pitch a tent and grab some sleep...

I hope you have more than the one day..If so, not that far away from Crater Lake is "Redwood National Park", Highway 101 called the avenue of the giants was an incredible sight...We ask one of the park rangers which was the "campground" to stay at and were told "Jedediah Smith" near Crescent City...I have traveled all over this country and seen just about everything there is to see...Nothing and I mean nothing I have ever seen was as spectacular as Jedediah Smith...You camp out right among the Redwoods...Then for a day hike we crossed a wooden bridge over the Smith River...It's when you cross that river that the sights become truely spectacular...The Redwoods are 300-350 feet tall, the sights defy description...All I can say is, if you ever get the chance, don't miss it...
