JOE SATRIANI IS THE ROCK GUITAR GOD!
Joe Satriani is the best rock guitarist EVER, hands down! He's the one who TAUGHT Steve Vai to play guitar...he also taught Kirk Hammond from Metallica, David Bryson from Counting Crows, and a bunch of other famous musicians! He also started the G3 tour with Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, etc. Nobody compares to Satriani!
If I had to pick a distant second place, it would be Angus Young from AC/DC. Not only is he a great guitarist, he has great stage presence. He's a ball to watch live.
P.S. Check out his albums "Surfing with the Alien" and "Live in San Francisco". They rock!
P.P.S. I stand corrected it was Hammond, not Hetfield.

Even though he's a rhythm guitarist, my vote is for James Hetfield. He wrote some of the greatest riffs and harmonies - and songs - of all time. Not to mention he recorded ALL the guitar parts except the solos on the first five Metallica albums.
And whoever said Satriani taught him is wrong - it's Kirk Hammett that studied with Satch.

I'd have to say Jimi Hendrix was the best.... the music just flowed through him like he was a meduim for some all-powerful musical spirit. Really a shame he died so young.

Chet Atkins. He made everything he did sound so simple, even when it was incredibly complex.
Yngwei Malmstein and Eric Johnson are right behind Atkins. They were on a special with Atkins years ago and Atkins called them the cream of the crop.
Eric Clapton - I just love him
BB King - to still be playing the way he does at his age, you just can't beat it.

Robert Johnson- king of the blues in my opinion.
He was a major inspiration to Eric Clapton who could also be considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
