The last step? There is no last step.
I agree about friendship being the first step, or the base, of any good relationship. (Other than business relationship perhaps, but it'd be nice if it applied there too). The steps inbetween the first and the 'last' aren't exactly mapped out in black and white. It's all about the two people and how things work for them.

Back then
When we first met
I saw a different you
Never thought to change my mind
Clearly to see the truth
You actually had taught me something
That maybe loves
Not just a one time thing
You showed me a better love
Which I'd not trade for anything
In the past
Which such I do no longer
As the way I first judged you
I thought you were nobody to me
And now I've grown to love you
I don't want to walk ahead
And leave you far behind
Rather I'd prefer
To just walk with you
Hand in hand
Your's blended with mine
I don't want to look over you
And see past what you see
I want to aline my eye's with yours
So it's as seen as through one being
I want us to grow closer
But not so close we want apart
I want it to be because you know
I'm the one you love by heart
I care to see you happy
That's why I trust you so
As well because I love you
And I just want you to know
Those that are at bond
But exists so far apart
No binds is ever closer
Then the one
Within's one's heart
