Because all babies are different sizes, some are early, some are late, some are on time. Also, every womans PELVIS is a different size, therefore, big pelvis is generally a quick labour, whereas a small pelvis is a slower labour. Some women pop babies out really easily, whereas others (like me) spend longer pushing the baby out.

Some babies come out breach (slower labour) or have broad shoulders (slower, difficult labour) and some even get stuck and have to be sucked or pulled out (assisted delivery with ventouse or forceps as the mother is too slow in getting the baby out).

As a general rule, the more babies you have the quicker your cervix dilates as it is more stretchy, and the quicker the labour.

Having had two children and compleatly different labours i would say that it is down to nature,it depends how long it takes for the cirvix to dialate,it some cases..it could be upto 12 hours. But these days there is good pain relief..and so a woman does not need to suffer too much.

labor is muscle contractions. All women do not have the same level of muscle tautness so labor times differ.
