You can drive from Chicago to Grand Rapids in a couple of hours so you really don't need to stop for the night.
On the other hand, if you are just looking for a place to hang out, I would suggest the Saugatuck/Douglas area. You might also try Michigan City, IN, close to the dunes, or maybe South Bend, IN

You really don't need to stop, it is only a 4 hour drive. If you are interested in seeing the lakeshore, stop in St. Joseph or Saugatuck/Douglas. You will love it.
