When I shut my computer off some nights I get up the next morning and it is back on. I know I am new to computers, but this does not seem ordinary. What is happening?

It isn't ordinary at all. It used to be a common problem with some motherboards that automatically perform a boot without you actually powering on the PC. It also suggests that your case isn't powering down the motherboard and is continually sending an electrical feed to the motherboard. I would suggest you take it back to the shop you bought it from and have them run diagnostic tests on the motherboard and also replace it if possible.

Also another issue is that if you have an old PC with Windows XP installed for example, the PC doesn't automatically shutdown unless you physically power off the power button on your case. How old is your PC?

Are you certain it is "off". Merely shutting down by system command, does not always shut down.

Wait and don't leave it until you know it has shut down.
XP will fail to shut down on occasion.
