Well, when I vistited the Canadian side of Niagra falls in May 2005 there was no charge. on the bank along the falls were beautiful landscaped parks and sidewalks. There were restaurants and gift shops. It was very open to the public and sightseers. I assume the new york side is the same...which i believe it is, because my sister didn't mention a fee when she went.
When you go, you might try getting into a restaurant with a view of the falls. Our group ate in the Canadian National Tower, which is a revolving restaurant...however I'm not sure if they cater to individuals, or if they just do big groups with advance reservations.
Well, anyways, i think I answered your question. You'll love the falls! Take money for trinkets, and quarters for those viewfinders that you often see around famous views.

It's free to see Niagara Falls on the Canadian side, however parking is not free , it's a bit pricey. To go on the maid of the mist you must pay.
The Skylon Tower Restaurant although expensive is a nice way to view the falls, both Canadian and American.
Just yahoo Niagara Falls or Niagara Parks Authority. The information should be there or contact (email) should be.
It's beautiful any time of the year!

Are you thinking American side or Canadian side? It is free on the Canadian side, but parking can be a big issue and it costs to park. Otherwise you can park a ways out and then it is a very long walk rather than the long walk from the falls parking. The area is very crowded, particularly in the summer, so parking in front of what you want to see doesn't work very well. They do have buses then you have to worry about bus schedules and the like.

It's free to just go look at the Falls, but the tours and boat trips through the falls cost money.

Nope, you just take the exit off the highway, and go see it. It will probably cost to park your car, but actually seeing the falls is free. They'll charge to go and take a tour down below or to go on the Maid of the Mist.
Contact a local travel agency. They should have the 411 on that.

Completely free to see the falls. If you want a Maid of the Mist boat tour, that costs money, but it's worth it!

It is free, the falls are huge so there's no way they can stop you from seeing it.
The only part that costs money is if you want to take the boat tours.
