i had to do this once in an art class. We had to take a black and white photo and then we put trace paper over it. on the tracing paper we traced shapes divided into the catagories of 'light', 'medium', and 'dark' until the entire picture had been divided into these categories. We then transfered these onto another sheet of paper on which we had to paint the light, medium, and dark areas with colors... for example yellow could be your 'light' color, red your 'medium', and dark purple your 'dark'. Of course andy warhol used silk screens and didn't hand paint the colors.

Download Gimp, free photo editing software, then play with it a bit. Once you've learned how to use it, this shouldn't be too hard to do.
