Voluntary Service Overseas, i.e., anywhere, but it won't be a barrel of laughs.
If you don't fancy that and don't want to be a tourist then you'd better either follow your linguistic abilities, or get hitched to a foreigner (is that the same thing?). If you can talk to people like you are one of them, then you are not a tourist. That takes either excellent language skills or a ready-made family in wherever it is.
Travelling for work is the same as not travelling at all. Pointless exercise. You're better off in the pub.

Tough question, my friend. You want have the cake and eat it too. I mean to say that you want to visit the best place in the world and not be a tourist. It should be your own city or town or village, where you are.
Good luck.

I've hitchhiked throughout Eastern Europe, and my favorite place is Bulgaria...it's not exactly fancy living, but I enjoy it! Also, I'd recommend Romania! The forests are beautiful! I've been to Romania many times...actually that's typically where I was hitchhiking to or from.
