Not sure, but have you ever read any of the QAF books that tell the stories that happened before the show began? You might find your answer in one of them. There are 3 I think. I think the first is called "Every Nine Seconds" by Joseph Brockton. Maybe they're at your local library.

He got it in Mexico. That's all I remember. When his nephew stole it from him, Justin mentioned that he got in Mexico and never takes it off. He was wearing it on the first episode, so there was no onscreen gift giving.
