it is safe if you do not have a high risk pregnancy

infact it is safer to have a baby at home because you are less at risk for infection, "Planned home birth for low risk women in North America using certified professional midwives was associated with lower rates of medical intervention but similar intrapartum and neonatal mortality to that of low risk hospital births in the United States."

"What is the relative safety of homebirth compared with hospital birth? Ole Olsen, a researcher from the University of Copenhagen, recently examined several studies of planned homebirth backed up by a modern hospital system compared with planned hospital birth. A total of nearly 25,000 births from five different countries were studied.

The results: There was no difference in survival rates between the babies born at home and those born in the hospital. However, there were several significant differences between the two groups. Fewer medical interventions occurred in the homebirth group. Fewer home-born babies were born in poor condition. The homebirth mothers were less likely to have suffered lacerations during birth. They were less likely to have had their labors induced or augmented by medications or to have had cesarean sections, forceps or vacuum extractor deliveries. As for maternal deaths, there were none in either group. "

I will post some links

You know, the thought of a home birth has so many plusses. A friend of mine had one, and everything went well. But with my pregnancy, after a day of labour - at the hospital - my babe's heart rate slowed to a dangerous level, and I had to have an emergency c-section. Everything turned out okay, but if it had happened at home, there would have been no way to have this done in time. From the moment they realized I was in distress to the surgery, only a half hour went by. So maybe be more afraid that just in case something could possibly go wrong it's better to be in a hospital.

I was afraid of needles at first too but I came to realize that I was afraid of something I didnt know about. It really is not that bad. And the epidural does not hurt. I was in too much pain to feel a little needle in my back. Trust me, you wont care as long as it is helping get rid of the pain. It is much safer to have your baby at the hospital rather than at home.

I'm afraid of hospitals and needles too!!! I really don't know what I'm going to do when I get pregnant and give birth. Everybody I know says that the epidural is the best, but I am terrified of needles and I tell them that I won't get an epidural, but they just laugh at me. I'm sure that you can give birth at home with a midwife, but it might depend on how well your pregnancy is.

Sure, you can have a baby anywhere. They have been born in the rice patty fields, cotton fields, taxi's, airplanes, and the best story I've heard is the African American girl who had a baby in the bathroom stall at her school during her prom. She wrapped the (living) baby up and took it out back to the dumpster, cleaned herself up a bit, and went back to the dance and partied till the cows came home. This was reported on National News a few years ago...

I don't think you should be afraid of the hospital you should be more afraid of if you don't make it to the hospital in time before you get an infection or worse something is wrong with your baby just think about it like this they are their to help you not hurt you think about that for awhile and good luck on the baby

You could have a midwife and do a home delivery. However, if you're afraid of needles, you're in for a rough pregnancy. Sorry to say, you get blood drawn a lot in the beginning.

you could - but i would definitely enlist the help of a registered midwife - however having said that - what will you do if you were to run into complications involving childbirth or with your newborn - at least a hospital is prepared for these emergencies.don't be afraid ! i think that is the best place to be.i had both my children in a hospital & when my son was severely jaundiced they had the appropriate machines to take care of that.

you're going to be begging for the needles full of drugs, trust me. if they had to put the needle in your eye, you'd probably let them if it helped :) I really dont recommend home births, i know people are all gung ho about it, but if you are that very small percentage that has complications or a prolapsed cord, you REALLY need to be in a hospital. why take the chance with your baby's or your own life?
