Well, it depends. No they dont need a sitter if the teen is mature enough to handel the responsability of being alone for such a long time w/o parental supervision
And Yes if they are very erresponsable. Because if you leave them alone for 5 nights w/o a sitter, they might throw a party or something you do not want them to be doing.

In my own opinon i think they are old enough to handle the resposability of being alone.
I also do not believe in baby sitters because i dont like having someone that i barely know come into my home and watch my child. The babysitter could turn out to be some kind of crazy serial killer or rapist. I have heard about this kind of thing on the news.

When I was sixteen I stayed by myself for a week with no chaperon. That was because I never gave my parent a reason not to trust me. I am 27 and would have to say that teens have change a lot in the past years and seem to be able to get in to trouble easier then ever before. But most are still good Kids and would be fine be them self. Maybe just have a close neighbor or friend look in on them and make sure everything is fine. Tell a neighbor that the first time some does not seem right to call you see you will know.

Most 16 year olds don't NEED a sitter, it's just that for parents to feel that their kids are safe is super important, especially if it is for a few days or longer. Could you imagine the guilty feeling if something DID happen? Go ahead and let your folks have their time away- it's not such a big deal. Besides, less than 2 years more and you won't have to worry about it, as you will be 18. So go ahead and let your parents "take care" of you- it's not the end of the world. They will get that great feeling you get when you think you are doing the "right thing", and so will you.

A minor is a minor! The parents COULD get into serious trouble should something - anything! - go wrong. A dog bite, a break in, and on and on. Parents are still held accountable in this country. I would hate to see my kid taken away from me by child protective services b/c I wanted a mere few days alone/away.
Get a sitter - an age appropriate one!!

That probably depends on the maturity of the 16-year-old...to be safe I'd say have an older sibling stay with them, or maybe a semi-hip aunt or uncle. My parents would have let me stay alone for five nights, but at the time...well, they didn't know me too well ;)

Yes, I don't think a 16 year old should be left home by themselves for 5 nights because now a days it is just too dangerous you should have a friend stay with you or a relative.

I consider myself a pretty hip parent but there is no way I would leave my 16 yr old home alone for a whole week! Not gonna happen....
Heck, I wouldn't leave my 17 year old home alone for that long. Why is this even an issue?

Depends on the kid. I think most 16-year-olds would do fine without a baby-sitter. Lock-up the carkeys and the liquor and have someone stop by to "check" on that teen.
Someone like a neighbor or aunt or best friend's mother.
It is more about the safety of that person than not trusting them to do right.
I live by myself, and I apreciate my son calling or coming by to see if I need anything or just to let me know he cares about me.

i dnt think the two should be left alone.
first of all emotions always outweigh maturity!!
i dnt think a 16 yr old needs to be babysat by a female unless he has some disbility. rather a male babysit would do.
then again this is up to the parent. good on the parent for not leaving him alone!!!
