Your writing will be more compelling if it's based on a subject you know intimately. It doesn't have to be an autobiography, but it can based around something with which you're very familiar or that you're passionate about. It can be a kind of soapbox from which you can express your view of the world as you see it or as you would like it to be.
It can take the form of whatever genre you enjoy reading: romance, thriller, historical epic, light comedy, mystery, fantasy. Whatever gets your juices flowing.
I personally enjoy the atmospheric suspense mystery-style where extraordinary things happen to ordinary people and the reader is never completely sure what is really going on till things slowly reveal themselves to a surprise ending. Whatever keeps the reader from putting the book down is usually a crowd pleaser.

I agree with some of the answers above that “The best stories always come from personal experience”. Many authors have had run away hits with books written which were drawn very closely from there personal lives. Take for example the young adult/sports book “Vision Qwest” by Terry Davis. This book is a cult classic and was even made into a movie. Davis has a degree in literature from Stanford but only broke into the market when he wrote s a very specific story closely related to his own life.

The best stories always come from personal experience. Therefore, no one can "give" you a good story idea, they can only spark one has been lying dormant within you all along.
Have you considered writing about a dyslexic midget who is rejected by society, murders his estranged father, joins the Anglican church, and finally finds acceptance as a mascot for the Philadelphia Long Johns?

the best story idea comes from the heart so it is different for each person. my best stories all come to me in dreams so my best ideas are usually in the fantasy and sci fi genre.

There is no answer to this question. If you're serious about writing, go do it, and stop wasting your time here.
