I was reading the news story on yahoo about a girl who got a text message that she was fired.

I don't know what she was fired for...but whether the company was youth-oriented or not, should they have fired her in a more professional manner or not, in your opinion?

Well I think that they should have fired her in person. Texting the girl to inform her that she was fired was a pathetic way to let someone go- I don't care that they say they work in a youth-oriented business and that they were keeping up with "youth culture"- The fact is that they need to be more professional and fire her using a "traditional" method.

I think they should have been more personal and fired her face-to-face.

The article that I read also said that they also tried calling her boyfriend. That too is unprofessional. They should speak with the person being fired directly. At my place of business, they are also required to do so in writing -- on paper, not text message.

I think it would also depend on the company's policies. A company has to be consistent with their hiring/firing practices. If the company trying to be "modern" and "youth-oriented", the policy should reflect that in writing.

They said they tried to contact her a few times and could not get in contact with her. Depending on the job, that may be grounds for dismissal anyway.

i just read the article. i definitely think they should have been more professional about it. the situation took place in england; maybe they aren't as professional as most business are in the US? on top of it, it was a body piercing and jewelry shop... not a huge corporation, so it is possible that this type of communication is almost expected.

They should have done it face to face. That seemed very childish and very unprofessional on their part. No matter what an employee does, i think they are worth having the decency to dismiss her in a professional manner instead of like a piece of trash.

Actually, depending on what state she's in, she may have some legal recourse, I hope so, thought that was incredibily lame to get fired that way.
