Since I will be arriving in Marseille Airport at 9:00 p.m. by myself, I am looking for a hotel by the airport rather than going into the city. Any suggestion?

If you're going in to Marseille from the airport, you'll probably take a bus to Gare St. Charles (the train station in town). It should be perfectly safe to take a cab from there to your hotel in Marseille even at 10 PM.

Alternatively you could take the bus from the airport to the Gare Routiere in Aix (which is actually closer than Marseille), and spend the night at the St. Christophe just a short (and perfectly safe) walk up the street or the Cezanne (even closer). I've stayed at both, and would be perfectly comfortable taking that walk even in the middle of the night. It'd be an easy bus ride back to Marseille the next morning.

I don't think that the walk down la Canabiere in Marseille to get to the hotels in the area around the old port would be dangerous either, but it's a lot easier to get lost if it's your first time, as compared with Aix, and a cab might be a better choice.

If I was going to spent more time in Marseille, I would take a cab downtown and check in directly to your hotel
