That's where I got my first tattoo. And mine didn't hurt much at all...not compared to some of my others anyways.
I will say this though...it depends on you, and your tattoo artist. I liken the experience of the needle hitting my skin for the first time to that of a minor bee sting. If you just put your mind someplace else for the duration of the tattoo...(I suggest making your first relatively small), you'll make it through...
And remember...the pain is only temporary...but if you choose wisely, you'll have a beatiful piece of art for the rest of your life...provided you take good care of it and you.
Don't listen to these people that say "never get a tattoo cause when you're old they will look awful"...I say...who cares about tomorrow...we don't even know if we'll live past today...so why not live today at its fullest... If nothing else, when we are old and saggy, we can have the not so gorgeous tattoos to remind us of the days we lived it up right :)
Good Luck! :)

All tattoos will be sore for a little while, make sure you make a wise decision with the actual tattoo though...that's a good place in comparison with the center of the back/other more fleshy areas of skin...

I got one on the back of my shoulder about 9 years ago and I don't remember it hurting at all. in fact I nearly fell asleep! i think i felt it more when he did the black outline but it only took 5 minutes and the colouring in bit was a doddle. my husband says the worst bit was the inner arm.
It prob does depend on your individual pain threshold. People say labour hurts too but it wasn't that bad either. Actually I fell asleep then too!!! I guess I sleep a lot.
The thing to remember is that it is never as bad as you would imagine.

It all hurts, its a needle vibrating in and out of your flesh, if you cant take the pain then don't get it. Getting a tattoo was the worst physical pain I have ever felt, and I have had 3 children and my stomach sliced open and 4 teeth cut from my scull.
