As a white person, I think it has given young black men a bad reputation.
The reputation (right or wrong) is that these guys think the ideal life involves daylong raping of women in a mansion full of bling.

Positive hip-hop and true hip-hop artist go unknown. The gangster rap that has become so popular and that has populated the media is ruining the reputation of blacks as some ignorant people assume that is how all blacks act. Gangster rap is ignorant, and violent among other things. Along with that comes the wide us of the word n*gger in their raps. This certainly does not contribute to a positive view of blacks.

Not at all. I think people are EXTREMELY ignorant when it comes to hip hop music and what it represents. All you hear on the radio or see in videos are the songs that degrade women and make it sound like gang activity, etc. is this cool exciting thing. There is nothing that "black people" can do to control what is in mainstream america. Its the corporate white folks that own the TV and Radio stations. Anyone who has any kind of knowledge of music, knows that the mainstream stuff sucks and is a bad representation of what hip hop music actually is. There are plenty of hip hop artists who are intelligent, well spoken, articulate, and they make positive music. Unfortunately, thats not what kids think is "cool" these days so it doesn't really sell.
If hip hop music has given black people a bad rap, its because those people are ignorant. And, unfortunately there are A LOT of black people who feed into the stereotypes... i consider them ignorant as well. Luckily, I grew up with a family who taught me the difference.

Maybe I'm overstepping my boundaries here because I'm not black, but I feel compelled to answer.
I don't think hip-hop is ruining the black culture. I think negativity in music of all kinds is killing youth culture. Anything that idolizes over-indulgence, promiscuity, greed and adoration is going to hurt a people as a whole and it's not just rap music that is saying that. But as Americans or "civilized" people, we are all encouraging the trend. Don't forget that big money from record sales will make record labels continue with a trend.
There are a lot of positive hip-hop artists out there that are not getting recognized for their greatness because positivity just plain doesn't sell. Look at Guru with his Jazzmatazz albums. He tried to expand the way people heard hip-hop and, while it was amazing, it never really caught on.
People like the negativity. They like to think that the world is theirs for the taking and music is only going to reflect on the indulgences of a society. Until people want a change, it will never happen. So I guess in a sense you could say that youth culture is destroying youth culture because a good majority of people have no real desire to reach out and expand their horizon.

I am my own person I will never be like the next person I am unique, different, one of a kind!!! I am not like the rest, I am not like some, I am not like most!!!
Does Paris Hilton give all white girls a bad rap, does hard rockers give all white men a bad rap how about this
Does Oprah Winfrey give all black women a good rap, but you and so many others dont think that way, people automatically see something negative and fly with that
we are not the same!!
Lets be more positive in life
If you are positive then positive things will always come your way!

Yes, I think that the way black men and women are portrayed in some music videos are disgusting. Why is it that almost every rapper or R and B artist has to have half naked women dancing in the background? And why is it that these sisters have such low self-esteem that they would try to go from video to video acting like a ho? It's sad that what these few people do reflect on our entire race as a whole. Since slavery, black people have always been generalized into one group based on the actions of individuals. Any black person who is on tv has the burden of representing all black people, and it isn't like this for white people. No one thinks that Marilyn Manson represents white culture do they? So why does Young Jeezy have to represent black culture?

Yes and No, true hip-hop is different form rap. Real hip-hop is about political issues like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5's "The Message" Rap, involves all those material things like bling, cars, and hoes. I like all music but I think Rap has become very one sided and materialistic.

it fairly is a paradox. Hip Hop is meant to be a mirrored photograph of the struggles of the internal city. The blame shouldn't in simple terms circulate directly to hip hop itself. Hip hop does not administration what gets performed on the radio or on the video channels on a similar time as the youngsters are out of faculty. every person bear in mind: no longer all of Hip Hop track is destructive. additionally bear in mind that those important labels placed all of their money and help at the back of the negativity on a similar time as the constructive MCs are left on the shelf to fend for themselves..

No, I personally don't because rap expresses what we go through and what we go through isn't all the time our fault- if anything people that aren't educated about rap and us black people make us seem bad and make it seem like we're bad people.
