im taking chemistry 102L this fall (introductory chemistry lab) and I need a lab notebook, obviously. I was wondering if a lab notebook can just be a composition notebook that is quad ruled (meaning, a notebook with graph paper inside) that i can purchase from any school supply store i.e. Office Depot or Staples. The reason why i ask this is because i took a college lab when i finished the 10th grade (through a special program) and i was told that i could just get that type of notebook and didnt have to get those fancy ones that the university book store sold with an extreme price....so were they just being nice or do people really just use that type of notebook?

Chemistry lab notebooks are usually hardcover and bound. They can take a heck of a lot more punishment than the simple coil bound notebooks. In short, yes those things that are sold at the college store are used in college and in real life.

I'd check with your prof/lecturer/TA -- as to how closely you need to follow the requirements. Now that you are no longer in high school, I expect the powers-that-be will be much stricter.

Incidentally, you can find cheaper versions of lab notebooks at stationary stores -- it will take a bit of extra looking though. (University/college bookstores do tend to be more expensive.)

Reading the booklet instead of enjoying the movie is the best way to see what the writer expected. Reading uses your creativeness, hones your reading skills, and can increase your vocabulary

Chemists typically use lab notebooks that can withstand lots of wear. (Yes, we chemists are vigorous in what we do!) Get one with carbon copies so you can turn in a copy to your GSI/TA/whateveryoucallthem. They can cost upwards of ten dollars but last for a while.

any notebook that has carbon copies usually is acceptable. ask your lab person for sure but most schools want you to write on one sheet and keep it and hand in what you did for that lab. hence carbon copies

Yes, the ones we use in industry are very expensive, like $150 I believe. I would check with your prof., but I used to just use those black composition books in college, they worked fine. Congratulations on being smart. Keep up the hard work!
